Fall Lima Bean Wreath

Sharing is caring!

This is a thrifty way to create a  fall wreath for your front door.

This is a project that takes some time to complete- maybe a few hours here and there in one weekend or a few week-nights after work.

This project was inspired by this green acorn wreath and this unpainted lima bean wreath.

You Will Need:

  • 2 lbs of large lima beans
  • glue gun
  • hot glue sticks – about 8-10
  • dollar store ribbon.
  • large Styrofoam circle (I used a 50% off coupon to the craft store to buy mine.)
  • 4 oz white acrylic paint
  • sponge paint brush
  • 1 can spray paint

Because we are going to spray paint this wreath, we need to protect the Styrofoam. Spray paint will eat the Styrofoam.

I searched online for solutions and found that any acrylic paint will work. I used a vanilla color that I grabbed for less than $1.00 at the craft store.

Apply a layer of the acrylic paint all over the foam wreath using a sponge brush.

Make sure you cover the inner area of the circle as well.

One coat will do.

Once done, let it dry.

Once the wreath is dry, you can add the lima beans.

No need to wash them or bake them or anything like that- just right out of the bag.

Use a glue gun to apply each bean individually.

I tried different methods, but what worked best is applying a full circle row at a time.

Keep going.

This takes a while.

Make sure all of the beans are facing the same direction- as uniform as possible.

You might want a break half way through.

Make sure you do the front and the back.

Don’t forget the inner circle, too.

I am borderline ADD.

I worked on it a couple of days.

There is only so much bean gluing a girl can do in one day.

Now spray paint it.

Just apply a coat evenly.

Let it dry.

Then apply another coat and search for any spots that need to be touched up.

If a bean falls off, re-glue it. Happens to the best of us.

Use ribbon (I used dollar store ribbon) to hang the wreath to your wreath hanger.

Nothing fancy.

This will be rained on after all.

And you’re done.

Warning, this is heavy.

I really like the way it turned out.
