N is for Night: A Letter of the Week Preschool Craft
Are you looking for summer activities for your preschooler? Are you interested in teaching the alphabet in a creative way? I’m Anna from The Measured Mom, bringing you another Letter of the Week Craft at Crystal and Company. I’ll be back each week to share a new craft and other alphabet activities for preschoolers.
This week I pulled out the finger paint with my k ids, which is always a hit at our house – and will probably go over well at your house too!
Let’s get started!
Here is what you’ll need:
- large piece of finger paint paper
- blue and purple finger paints
- gold or silver glitter paint (optional)
- letter N on black construction paper (cut from this pattern: Letter N Pattern)
- star stickers
- newspaper
1. Spread out your newspaper and place the finger paint paper on top.
2. Squirt a small amount of finger paint all over the paper. Add the glitter paint if you want some extra sparkle! Then use your fingers to spread it out to the very edges of the paper.
3. The finger paint will need a day to dry. The next day, glue your letter N onto the center of the paper.
4. Add star stickers to create a beautiful night sky! (Our stickers were a little stubborn, so we used a glue stick for those that wouldn’t stay put.)
Here are our finished projects.
SONG FOR LETTER N:
Do you know it’s very hard to find rhymes and songs for letter N? But I did find one your preschooler will enjoy – be sure to add some actions! Sing it to the tune of “Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush.”
This is the way we pound our nails,
pound our nails, pound our nails,
This is the way we pound our nails,
So early in the morning.
BOOKS FOR LETTER N:
The Best Nest, by PD Eastman
When my kids are waiting for the pediatrician, they always grab the books in the waiting room — and this is their favorite. Mrs. Bird is unhappy with her nest, so she sends her husband out to find a new one. Every new home has a problem (like the nest they build in a bell tower!), and finally Mrs. Bird finds that her first home is the best nest.
The Napping House, by Audrey and Don Wood
This book is a cumulative rhyme – it reminds me of “This is the House that Jack Built” – but it’s much more interesting and entertaining! At the beginning the pages are a gloomy blue, as Granny takes a nap on a rainy afternoon. On top of Granny lies a child, and on top of him, a dog, etc. As everyone slowly wakes up (when a wakeful flea bites the mouse!), the book becomes brighter until the final page when a happy and awake household dance outside. A favorite!

Starting in September I’m going to start doing a letter a week with my 4-year-old, so this will come in handy. She’ll love the craft, especially – stars and fingerpaints: what more could a preschooler ask for?
Emma- these crafts will be perfect. Currently we have A-O done and a new letter is added each week.
Enjoy!
This looks like a super fun “N” craft. My toddler loves paint and this would be the perfect thing to do with him. 🙂
Kirstylee- this craft is perfect for hands on kids!
