Valentine Preschool Sorting Activity

Sharing is caring!

The other day I was digging through some of my craft supplies and Matthew was helping me. My kids love digging through my craft stuff, with or without me for that matter.

He came across these leftover Valentine cupcake liners from last year. He begged for us to do something with them.

I had nothing on hand to make cupcakes, but I figured we could use them for some preschool sorting activities.

Here is what we did using only supplies we already had on hand. Make sure you check out all of our Valentine crafts and activities while you’re here.

Sorting activities are excellent early math skills for preschoolers, which is excellent for early childhood development.

I love when we can take a learning activity and make it fun. Such a great hands on learning opportunity!

You Will Need:

Gather your supplies.

Grab one sheet of construction paper for each color of pom pom you have.  Our package of pom poms had white, red, pink and purple, so those are the construction paper colors we used.

Use your circle punch to cut one circle from each sheet of construction paper.

Grab a cupcake liner for each color pom pom. This means we used four cupcake liners.

Place one of the circles in the bottom of each cupcake liner to identify for your toddler which color pom poms go in each spot.

Get ready to sort!

Set the sorting station up similar to this.

The cupcake liners are lined up and the pom poms are all in a dish. The jumbo tweezers are near the dish.

If you do not have jumbo tweezers, no worries, they can just sort with their hands. The significance of the tweezers help to build fine motor skills.

Let your preschooler start to sort the pom pom colors into the correct container based on it’s color.

Matthew worked really hard sorting. He tried to work fast and thought it was funny if he worked so fast that I could not get a picture.

Silly boy.

He said his colors out loud as he sorted.

You can count the pom poms too if attention spans will allow it.

Sorting, sorting, sorting.

When he was done sorting, this is what it looked like.

He was very proud of himself.

Fine motor skills are great for building hand strength and growing coordination for things like cutting and holding a pencil.

Sorting and classifying are perfect skills for building cognitive learning and will help our little ones prepare for math and reading skills.

Try a sorting activity with your little one. This one is perfect for a preschool Valentine play date!
