Homemade Eczema Cream
Our youngest son battled intense eczema from the time he was weeks old until he was one and our doctor would finally test him for allergies. I wish then I had known of a homemade eczema cream.
Our experience was awful. He skin was constantly raw from scratching, scabbed from scratching, often bleeding and he was miserable all the time. We were on hefty medicines that potentially could cause long term effects. We went once a month (sometimes more often) to a pediatric dermatologist. He had MRSA twice and STAPH during this period of time. Heartbreaking to watch your baby in pain. His skin hurt. He was often miserable. The summer heat was hard on his skin. The winter bitter cold dried him out, we never could get a break that first year.
He is six years old now and once they could identify what he was allergic to, his condition made a 180° turn. While he still has eczema now, it is pretty mild. Current day we really just deal with spots of scaly dry skin. He seems to always have a patch under his neck and then here and there on his back or tunny.
We’ve ditched the hardcore steroids and skin thinning creams!
I’ve been contacted by many of you who know our story wanting to know if I am aware of any solutions for kiddos (or grownups for that matter) who are battling with eczema that we can make at home. Some of the creams we used with Matthew when he was little were upwards of $100 a tube!! This would last us about 2 weeks… But that is not all. We had creams we could only use in certain areas of his body. We had other creams that were specific to MRSA. It was a money pit. While it worked, we knew there were potential long term effects from some of the lotions.
This is what we are using on Matthew now. Keep in mind, his eczema is not at all like it was the first year of life and a big part of his healing came there. I nursed him the first year and we had no idea he was allergic to things I was eating.
This recipe for homemade eczema treatment is made from things that are all of the earth. I can sleep well at night putting this cream on his eczema patch that is on his neck or back. If you’re having issues, I really encourage you to give it a try. This can also be used on your patches of severe dry skin. And the leftover ingredients can be used to make homemade sunscreen, homemade shaving cream, a natural diaper rash cream and more!
Ingredients:
- 1/2 c raw, unrefined shea butter
- 1/2 c virgin (unrefined) coconut oil
- 1 T local uncooked, raw honey (go to your farmers market)
- 40 drops lavender, therapeutic grade essential oil
- 10 drops Melaleuca (tea tree) essential oil, therapeutic grade
Other Supplies:
- Double boiler and sauce pan
- mixer with bowl (I use my standing mixer)
- small Mason jar
Use a double boiler set up to melt the shea butter and coconut oil.
Once melted add in the tablespoon of honey.
Mix well with a spoon.
Remove from heat and add the oils.
Pop the bowl in the fridge until it begins to solidify again.
When it starts to turn to a solid it will lighten in color.
Now you want to mix it. I have the best results using the whisk attachment on my standing mixer. You can use the regular mixing paddle- I just like more of the whipped type cream for this.
Whip it on high until it is the desired consistency. If it is not thick enough let it sit until it is more solid.
Transfer it into your Mason jar. Apply to eczema skin as needed with clean hands.
I love how moisturizing shea butter is. It is amazing on your skin! Coconut oil is good fat and offers excellent levels of Vitamin E which is also great for your skin. Honey has bacteria killing properties, but it also is what you eat a spoonful of when you have allergies. It is perfect for eczema, in my opinion. Therapeutic grade lavender oil is very healing to the skin and very soothing. Melaleuca oil (also known as tea tree oil) is an excellent antiseptic! (You can add Melaleuca oil to your soaps and shampoos too! My husband LOVES tea tree oil.)

I just made the eczema cream recipe with honey. I am not so happy about it because it feels very sticky.
I think it is not an extra good thing to use the honey in this cream. Because it is so sticky it feels uncomfortable and a little itchy.

I’ve had good luck using unrefined beeswax instead of honey.
My daughter had struggled with eczema since she was a baby. She scratches so bad at her skin. We have used steroid creams, dermatologists and the usual triamcinolone. I decided to go the natural route and use the Made from Earth Pure Aloe Skin Treatment. This product has worked wonders and we only had it a few days.
