Homeschool Ice Cream Poetry Hour

Sharing is caring!

One of our favorite things to do lately is sit around reading together in the afternoon.

Part of our homeschool day includes read aloud stories and poetry.

I want my boys to grow up with an appreciation for words.

Sometimes we read in the car, while we’re waiting on another brother doing baseball practice or doing an extra class that we take outside of the home.

Sometimes we read on the sofa in the living room, at the kitchen table or in bed.

Sometimes we read and enjoy a hot cup of tea or hot chocolate together.

Recently we tried something new and had an ice cream poetry hour!

I made a little ice cream station that was perfect for Fall!

This is what our station included:

I filled a large bowl with ice and put the personal size containers in the the bowl.

I love that each ice cream cup is small and just the rise size for one serving.

Each Brio! cup has 5 g of protein, probiotics, is made using organic milk and no GMOs.

The flavor my boys chose from are:

  • Dark Chocolate
  • Madagascar Vanilla
  • Cafe Latte
  • Tropical Mango
  • Vanilla Caramel

Personally, I LOVE pistachios. And nutmeg screams Fall!

This is what I used to top mine.

It was so good and it hit the spot for my ice cream craving.

I am up for an ice cream treat just about every day! {wink, wink}

Our 15 year old moved his ice cream to a small waffle bowl and topped it with hot fudge.

As the kids topped their ice cream snack, we headed outside with a blanket and our poetry books.

One of my 10 year old twins chose the Madagascar Vanilla (a man after my own heart) and topped it with cinnamon and put it in a waffle bowl. He said it was super delish!

My other twin is not a fan of chocolate.

Can you believe that?! I know, shocking…. there must be something wrong with him.

I was not shocked that he went for the Very Strawberry and topped it with more fresh fruit.

Anthony was eager for a second round.

I mean, who does not want to try them all?

He grabbed the Cafe Latte flavor this time. Perfect for the coffee lovers.

My husband LOVED this one. We saved one for him when he got home from work.

This was the perfect time to all sit together outside and take turns reading poetry together.

Oh, you know what else I love about these ice creams?

On the inside of the lid, there is a plastic spoon you can pop off and use. It was PERFECT for the 2 year old who loves feeding himself.

Here are some of the books we love to read during poetry time together; All The Small Poems and Fourteen More, Poetry Teatime Companion, The Llama Who Had No PajamaThe Arnold Lobel Book of Mother Goose, Read Aloud Poems for Young People and although it is not a book of poetry we love Minn of the Mississippi

Here is what I love about this ice cream poetry hour. You do not have to homeschool to do it. This would be such a fun activity to do when your kiddos get home from school in the afternoon or in your preschool classroom as you read the poetry to them. This could also be a fun birthday party idea!

What is your favorite way to read poetry? With ice cream?

This post is sponsored by Brio! Their ice cream is AMAZING! If you see it, grab some!

  5. Oh my gosh! An ice cream station is such an awesome idea – why have I never considered this before?! The weather at our place right now seems more likely we’d need a hot chocolate station, but I can definitely see this happening come spring and summer!
