31 Hacks That Take the Headache Out of Moving

Sharing is caring!

Spring time is here. The weather is warming up and I am loving the mild, warmer weather we have had here in Texas. Something else I have noticed other than pleasant temperatures are for sale signs. There are two homes for sale on our street.

It seems the spring is really an ideal time for houses to go on the market. Spring time is almost a huge sign of transition. Trees are getting greener, gardens are growing, flowers and blooming, and families are moving! The nice weather is really an opportune time to make a transition into a new house.

Just the thought of moving can be overwhelming, especially when you have children. What to pack and how to pack so that you have everything you need when you need it can be such a mind drain. Anything that makes the moving and packing process easier I am totally game! So if you and your family are planning for a big move here are some moving tips and tricks that will ease your mind and get you prepared!

31 Hacks for the Next Time You Move

1. Create a moving caddy or tote that holds tape, scissors, a box cutter, markers, and labels for easy packing!

2. Consider a moving day kit that holds household cleaners, extra trash bags, scissors, Bounty paper towels and water bottles.

3. Color code your boxes using colored labels according to the room they belong in to easily find what belongs where.

4. Use egg cartons for jewelry to keep things from getting tangled or lost.

5. Pack up books and other heavy items in rolling suitcases to make the transition easy!

6. Use clothing to wrap up breakables.

7. Take pictures of the back of the television and cable box to ensure you rewire everything correctly once you move.

8. Invest in foam plates to use as a cushion between dishes.

9. Group hanging clothes together with zip or twist ties and then cover with a trash bag. Easy carry and they won’t get dirty!

10. Create a toolbox. This will help when putting things away and hanging things back up. You could also store hardware in it.

11. Pack a few days worth of clothes for everyone in a separate bag so there is no need for digging through boxes to find the necessities.

12. Tape mirrors and picture frames with tape to absorb shock during the move.

13. Store sheet sets inside of the coordinating pillow cases to make the finding the set a cinch!

14. Prep freezer meals in advance before the move so you have dinner done already. We have a Facebook group with printable menu ideas and grocery lists.

15. Create a cooking essentials basket to have the essentials on hand right after you get to your new place.

16. Place knives inside potholders to keep from them cutting through the boxes.

17. Consider not packing your coffee maker if it saves lives in the morning!

18. Use clear blanket bags to pack clothes to you see just what is inside.

19. Save space in packing with vacuum bags for clothes, stuffed animals, heavy blankets, etc.

20. If you have been hoarding grocery bags use them for padding too!

21. Store hardware for furniture in labeled baggies.

22. Store wires and cables in toilet paper tubes for easy storage.

23. Protect your mattress from stains and such by placing a sheet over the top and bottom!

24. Store drawer items in gallon bags for easy unpacking!

25. Transport your seasonings and spices in your crockpot and other large pots from your kitchen.

26. Make handles on your moving boxes by cutting a triangle shape on each side of the box!

27. Keep the weight of your boxes around 40 pounds so they don’t become overloaded!

28. Zip tie storage totes to keep the lids from coming off during moving.

29. Invest in 5 gallon buckets for carrying dishes easily and compact!

30. Use plastic wrap to wrap drawers and keep things in place instead of emptying them out!

31. Fix up your first-day essentials bin or bag. Stock this bin with a few rolls of Bounty paper towels to keep your new place clean and also conquer spills and other messes.  You can also throw in paper plates, cups, and plastic ware to easily arrange meals. (Bounty is a more absorbent paper towel, which means the roll lasts longer and you don’t need to use as much to tackle all the messes that come before and after a move!) Having Bounty on hand helps solve messes with spills. Moving is hard enough. Nobody wants to deal with a mess that is bigger than what moving can be. Keep your new place clean and enjoy your family when you have Bounty handy!
