Ultimate Guide to Bringing Home a New Puppy

Sharing is caring!

Do you have pets in the home?

We have 2 small’ish dogs and they are such a special part of our family. We have had McCoy for a few years now and then last summer we added Princess to our family. McCoy was a rescue dog who conveniently was already house trained. Princess has taken some training.

This is sweet Princess.

A lot of training.

I-want-to-pull-my-hair-out-training. But she is just so cute, isn’t she?

Bringing her home was such an exciting and new experience. I mean, we already had one dog, but there is something about puppies and children that is just different. Of course the whole process of house training and the ins and outs of managing a tiny little puppy came as a daunting task for sure! Having a puppy is a huge responsibility that the whole family is a part of. New puppies are so sweet and we absolutely love our dogs. They have done some really silly things and we have loved watching them grow and learn together.

Puppies make messes. Whether they are potty problems, muddy feet, chewed shoes, or pet hair disasters you all can relate with the messes from pets. Being prepared when bringing home a new puppy is a must! Here are our tips for managing a new furry family member.

Here is the most loyal dog I have ever owned, McCoy. He protects this home like it is his palace.

5 Tips for Bringing Home a New Puppy

1. Be patient with your new furry friend! This is certainly a tough one. Understanding that your puppy is going to make messes and being patient through their learning process will contribute to a successful outcome of training your pet.

2. Consistency is key. If you are tackling house training or even obedience training being consistent is a key essential to having a new pet. Things have to remain the same every day.

3. Use treats when needed. Some doggies need a little extra help through the entire training process. Giving small rewards will encourage good behavior.

4. Use safe confinement for your new dog. Invest in a kennel or crate for confining your pet when you are not home. This will deter some serious messes and also help with the training process!

5. Discipline your pet and provide alternatives. If your pet is making a mess telling them no consistently is sufficient punishment for teaching them their behavior is not good. Alternatives for chewing and other unwanted behavior is a must to create good habits.
