A Starting Place When You Want to Get Fit

A year ago we started a workout routine. We’ve tried hard to go to the gym 3 times a week for the last year.

I meet my pastor’s wife and we work hard to encourage one another at our local recreation center. Sometimes getting out of bed at 5:30 is the hardest part, but we have found that once we are there and working out, we are so glad we did it. One of us sends the other a text about 5:30 am asking if the other is up and ready to work out. Some days we complain and dread it. (Ok, every day that is me.)

Our goal each week is to do one day of cardio, one day of legs and one day of arms. We’ve been using an online workout app and modifying it according to our needs. Personally, I am not looking to be buff, I just want to be healthy.

I am pretty picky about what I am comfortable wearing at the gym. I hate showing my upper arms, so if I wear a tank, I wear a jacket or another workout top over it.

I love wearing leggings year round with shorts over them. I have full length leggings and mid calf length. I also have a couple of pair of wool lined leggings I wear in the winter.

While it is so hard for me to have excited motivation to get out of bed on our workout days, I always have so much energy the rest of the day. We usually text each other mid day and say,  “So glad we went today!”.  Having a workout routine has been 100% important for me. Otherwise, I would have zero accountability and I would have given up on it a long time ago.

Champion Leggins

You know what I love? I need seemless comfort when I am working out. If I am uncomfortable I am miserable. That’s one thing that makes Champion GEAR exclusively at Sports Authority so great. “Seamless comfort. Pure Performance.” I love these leggings and the comfortable material they are made out of.

  1. I’ve never had the opportunity to exercise with my pastor but I have done a lot of hiking with a friend of mine from church. Thanks for reminded me to call him up and touch base. I haven’t been in the best of health for the past few months so I have been out of contact. I miss our conversations and how great I felt soaking up the sun. I agree with you that gear makes all the difference. If I wear the wrong socks I end up with blisters all over my feet and if I wear the wrong pants I may even develop a little road rash. Great workout tips I just may adopt parts of your routines into my regimen.

  2. I think this is all great info for anyone who wants to get into a routine and isn’t sure where to start! I’m the very same way! I need to have comfortable clothes but most of all SHOES! I’m so funny about my shoes. If they’re off or just not quite right, I’m off and it’s a mess.

  3. I need to have a starting place and do it now I am severely overweight and I don’t move which is a huge problem for me. I need a definite plan going forward and I have to stick to it

  4. That’s a great round up of ideas to get you started. Sometimes just taking the first step is the hardest. What’s helped me is having a supportive spouse who I can workout WITH so long as we agree on what we’re doing.

  5. Sometimes I want to exercise and just don’t know where to start – I get overwhelmed and end up not doing anything! I can’t wait to check out the exercise list you have. I love workout videos and workout games(like from the Wii U). It makes it so much more fun and make you feel like you aren’t exercising.

  6. great list of exercises. I’m definitely going to try #2 for thighs!

I will have to check out that 10 Ways to Burn More Calories in Every Workout from Spark People post because that’s something that would be beneficial for me. In the summertime and warmer weather days, I don’t need motivation to workout. However, when winter hits…it’s really hard to drag myself to the back room to exercise.

I think getting started is always the hardest! Once you can find a “groove” or routine, it does become easier. It’s making the time and making the effort to get it done!

  9. Although I love the benefits of working out and I love how it makes me feel, it is very hard for me to stick to a work out routine. I gain weight and then i lose it and it is such a vicious cycle. Thank you for these tips! The more comfortable and fun a workout routine the easier it is to stick too!
