Recipe for Homemade Laundry Detergent
I have been making homemade laundry detergent powder for almost two years. I absolutely love it.
I have made a couple of different versions. All of them are really easy, they each just smell a bit different.
This recipe for homemade laundry detergent uses Fel-Naptha and Gain Scent Booster. You will be able to do 271 loads of laundry with it and it only cost $0.10 per load of laundry!
Let me who you how easy this is to make!
Here is what you will need.
Ingredients:
- 1 (55 oz) box of Arm and Hammer Super Washing Soda
- 1 (4 lb) box of Arm and Hammer Baking Soda
- 1 (76 oz) box of Borax
- 3 (5.5 oz) bars of Fels-Naptha soap
- 3 (lbs) OxiClean
- 1 (19.5 oz) container of your favorite Gain Scent Booster (totally optional for added fragrance)
Run the Fels-Naptha bars through the food processor using the shredding blade.
Put all of the shredded Fels-Naptha in a large bowl.
Change the blade to the chopping blade.
Put 1/4th of the shredded Fels-Naptha back into the processor. Add in 1/4th of the baking soda.
Chop on high for 30 seconds or until well blended.
Dump the combination into a large bucket. I use a Home Depot 5 gallon bucket. You can read more about these details in the first DIY detergent post I did.
You’re also going to add all of the other ingredients to the bucket. You can read more of the step-by-step directions for homemade laundry detergent for more details.
I really love the smell of this Gain Scent Booster. I’ve used Purex Crystal’s, Bounty Scent Boost and Downy Unstoppables in the past as well. All of them add a unique and lovely smell. If you have a family member with sensitive skin, you can omit this.
Put a lid on the bucket and roll it and shake it until it is well mixed.
I also like to use a metal slotted spoon or spatula to do some mixing by hand as well. You want it well combined.
Then, fill a large glass jar with detergent. Ensure it has an air tight lid.
Use one coffee scoop of detergent for each load. (2 T)
This detergent is
- HE safe
- safe for cloth diapers
- safe for front load washers
- safe for sensitive skin, just omit the scent boosters
- does not fade clothes
- comparable to expensive and over prices store bought detergents
- ok to use with essential oils
My clothes come out super clean. Remember, we have a houseful of boys. They get filthy all the time!
If you’re picky like me and on a budget, I think you will love this detergent. I know we do!!
Ya know, making my own had never been something I have wanted to do. Call me lazy LOL But you make it seems almost like I need to. Thank you for sharing at the (mis)Adventures Monday Blog Hop. I look forward to what you share this week.
