Tips for Thanksgiving with Kids

Every Thanksgiving we pack up our family a few days before Thanksgiving and we head from Dallas to San Antonio.

We have done this since our twins (who are now 11) were little. We look forward to this time together as a family and all of the memories that we make every single year.

Over the years I have traveled with many kids in tow, especially as we have increased our family in size. Just when I thought the baby years were over, here I am using my best advice again for traveling with kids during Thanksgiving. These tips are perfect if you are traveling short distance or long distance to see family for the holiday.

Tips for Thanksgiving with Baby in Tow:

1. Travel at night so the littles will sleep and dress them in their pajamas. I cannot tell you enough how much this has saved our sanity. Now we travel very late- like the wee hours of the morning. You don’t have to travel that late, but traveling while kiddos are sleeping will make for quiet trips that allows the driver to focus on the drive. We have been known to call this “taking the shortcut”. Our kids all fall asleep and wake up five to six hours later and tada…. we are at Grandma and Grandpa’s house! Our big kids literally say as we take up, “please take the shortcut”.

2. Always travel with plenty of diapers and wipes in tow. I do this for a couple of different reasons. First, I do not want to spend my time running to the store for diapers during the holiday crowds. Hello, Black Friday torture. No thank you! Two, if I stay behind with the kiddos and my FIL or husband makes the trip to the store, there is no guarantee they will grab the brand I’ve asked for. Let’s face it, they want to get in and get out. And details…. they don’t always notice the details on the list. Right now, through November 30th, you can get $10 off your purchase of two Pampers diapers or wipes items when you shop in store! No brainer!

3. Do laundry while you travel. I cannot stress this enough. I have a super sweet MIL who encourages this. She does not want me to go home with tons of dirty laundry. Every day we are there I do a load of our laundry and any towels we use, etc., while there. There are eight of us….. we can dirty a lot of stuff in 24 hours. I generally come home with one small grocery sack with odds and ends that are dirty when we travel for Thanksgiving. There is nothing worse than coming home from five to seven says of travel with loads and loads of dirty laundry.

4. Bring a few items from home that helps your little one associate with sleep. For us this is the Pack and Play. My husband and I get very little sleep if we let the baby co-sleep while we travel. The Pack and Play gets set up in the room we sleep in.

5. Travel with a nice playlist of sleepy music like lullabies and even books on audio. These are great for getting kids to sleep as well as using if they wake up in the middle of your trip.

What are your best tips for traveling with babies and little kids?
