What order is best to teach letters?

Teachers of preschoolers have various strategies for teaching the alphabet.

But what is the best order to teach letters?

Some say that the best way is to start with the letter that appears most frequently in print.

Others contend that it is better to begin with letters that are easy to identify and produce, such as “m” and “b.”

Still others advocate starting with letters that are special to the child, such as the first letter of his or her name.

We have been homeschooling for over a decade. We start by learning six letters that allow them to make multiple words. Here are the six seven letters we learn, one week at a time: F, B, M, T, R and A.

After learning these six letters they can create words like bam, ram, mat, bat, fat, rat, bar, far, etc.

However you choose to teach your preschooler the alphabet, remember that patience and consistency are key. With a little time and effort, your child will be reading in no time!
