Homemade Carpet Freshener That Kills Fleas

Sharing is caring!

I can’t possibly be the only person on the planet with some carpet areas in their house.  Am I?

You have no idea how badly I want to get rid of the carpet. I would love to have hardwood floors throughout our house. Right now we have “fake” hardwood in the kitchen and dining area.

One of the reasons I want to get rid of the carpet is because I think it is gross and it holds nasty smells, in my opinion.

Let me show you how easy it is to make homemade carpet freshener (that kills fleas).

 You Will Need:

Assemble the jar with the lid on it.

Use the hammer and screw to tap a circle of holes into the lid as illustrated below.

Add the  food grade diatomaceous earth and the baking soda to the jar.

Grab your essential oil. You could use peppermint, lavender or any scent you want. I chose a purifying oil because of it’s purifying properties.

Add 10 drops of the oil and use a spoon to stir it up.

And there you have it.

Pop the lid back on the jar and shake the freshener onto your carpet.

It all vacuums right up. And, that diatomaceous earth (or borax) will kill any fleas in your carpet!

  1. This is an awesome DIY carpet cleaner. I have 5 dogs and we live rural in the mountains so you can imagine the condition of the carpets if I do not keep them in check. This will definitely help. Thanks!!

    1. Do you have fleas in your classroom?
      Kidding.
It would be a great carpet freshener in your classroom!

  2. What is Diatomaceous Earth??? I need to know in other to make this I have 2 cats and a dog. Please let me know where to get this ASAP I just got new carpet and I don’t want to put anything but good in it. Thank you!

    1. Diatomaceous Earth is an all naturl fossil crumble that is made into a powder. It is a natural pest control rememdy, amongst other things. It is safe to consume. You can read more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diatomaceous_earth

In the post I included a link to buy it on Amazon. It is a nice size bag for $10.

    2. As mentioned in the article, be sure to get food grade diatomaceous earth. A form is sold to be used in pool filters, but it isn’t food grade. Often sold in feed stores as it is commonly used on farms for chicken. You can de-flea your pets directly by putting a sock in the powder then patting them down, like a powder puff. If the pets lick it, even better – it is a natural de-wormer. I have actually put some in their food. Overseas missionaries often ingest it for the same reason. 🙂

  3. Another great carpet freshener is a one pound box of baking soda, 1/4 c. borax and 2 T Purex Crystals! Smells incredable and the scent lasts a long time! (Doesn’t kill fleas though!) Also, the lid from a Parmesian cheese container will fit on a mason jar and makes a wonderful shaker!

It’s so much fun to make your own cleaning products! Thanks for sharing, Crystal!

  4. I love that this kills fleas. We used DE when we lived in the Caribbean to keep the ants at bay. I have been told (by other missionaries) that DE also kills intestinal parasites in humans and animals. (Disclaimer: I have not tried it, but it does sound legit.) Thank you for sharing at the Caffeinated Crafters Link Party!

  17. I would like to know if there is a certain time to leave it in the carpet for maximum affectest to work for killing the fleas?

  19. I have sprinkled a bit of diatomaceous earth around my dog’s bed, and I sometimes give her a “flea massage” with it, (as a precaution–I have flea paranoia!) which she loves. Years ago, our cat had fleas, and it was a nightmare, so I keep a close eye on our dog! I stopped by from the Artsy Fartsy Mama link party. Have a great day!

  20. Mother of 3 says:

Such a great idea! Pinning in case we ever need to get rid of fleas.

  21. I had a dog and she died. My 3 cats got fleas from the dog, my husband is the one that wanted the dog, we’ve spend over a $1,000 to try and get rid of the fleas!! My cats are miserable. All they do is lick their privet parts and scratch and scratch! Were not over run with fleas but I would like to try your carpet freshener. Can I put tree tea oil in it? Were both on disability so we have a tight budget.
    Thank you.

  22. It’s a great idea to get rid of fleas. Also, the process of making Carpet Freshener is very simple. Thanks for sharing!

  23. Deanna M Copp says:

OK I have a question – I love this idea but I have sensitivities to scents – chemical and natural scents – ( owed grass – lilacs and more) Do you have an esstional oil that is unscented. I get that kinda defeats the purpose of the esstional oils but thought I would ask.

    1. Its perfectly fine to skip the essential oil. The purpose of the one I used was to help purify, not a must. Or choose an oil scent that you can handle. Otherwise, for attacking odor in the carpet, add baking soda.
