The History of Alice in Wonderland
Do you know the history behind Alice in Wonderland?
As a homeschool mom I love to know the history behind the classic literature I share with my children. I love to share this history with my boys as they relate to what life was like for children traveling 150 years ago. Children traveling via boat, for example. No DVD player for entertainment, instead beloved storytelling.
“This here young lady” said the Gryphon, “she wants for to know your history, she do”
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland began as a story told by Rev. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson to the 3 Liddell sisters, Lorina Charlotte, Edith Mary and Alice Pleasance on a boat trip on the Thames River near Oxford, England on July 4, 1862.
Alice enjoyed the story so much that she asked Rev. Dodgson to write it down. He spent several years completing the story and presented young Alice with a handwritten copy of “Alice’s Adventures under Ground” on November 26, 1864. Dodgson had started using the pen-name Lewis Carroll several years earlier, and in 1865, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was first published. The original edition included original illustrations by John Tenniel, and the tradition of illustrated Alice books was born.
