If You Give a Squirrel a Cheese Ball
This past weekend we finally had Matthew’s third birthday party. With a large family of our own, and so many nieces and nephews with spring birthdays, it really can be challenging.
Then throw in that most of the kids play sports in our families and you are pretty much at a ball game and a birthday party every weekend.
Literally.
On the day of our kid’s birthday we always take them to dinner. Then their party follows in the coming weeks. In this case it took us two months to pin down a date.
Nonetheless, Matthew had a blast.
Playing with his cousins. Running around the park. Eating hotdogs.
His smile is contagious!
My sister came out early to help me set up the party at the park. (And finish up some of the last-minute details. I have no idea what I would do without my family.)
When we arrived at the park to set up for the party there was a squirrel in our reserved pavilion. An eager and playful squirrel at that.
When we sat the cupcakes on the table he literally jumped up on the bench and was going to jump up on the table, but my sister stopped him.
Soon we found ourselves chasing him around the pavilion trying to shew him away.
He did not care. He ran in circles playing games with us. He was not intimidated by us one bit.
So I threw him a cheese ball chip.
And he ate it.
Happily.
He sat still and even let me photograph him.
About this time my husband comes up freaking out that we have made friends with said squirrel.
‘If he is getting close to you there is something wrong. That is not normal. He must be sick. You know those animals can attack you?!’
He could not believe we had given the squirrel food. Â He just knew we were looking for trouble.
Well, Mr. Squirrel would not go away.
Before we knew it, Lenny was making friends with Mr. Squirrel.
He was amazed at how playful and friendly this critter was.
So, he did what any birthday -party -throwing- dad would do…. he gave the squirrel a cupcake.
Hum, looks like someone is eating their words. Pun intended.
If you give a squirrel a cheese ball, he is probably going to ask for a cupcake.
(and a party favor)

It looks like he truly enjoyed the party!
The squirrel and my three year old enjoyed the party.
It was lots of fun. 🙂
