Sharing is caring!

One thing I love doing is creating delicious cake recipes for my family when it is their birthday.

Our eighteen year old had his birthday last week and I asked him what he wanted for his birthday cake this year. He asked me to surprise him.

What teen would not love a Layered Kit Kat Cake? Oh, you are going to love how easy this is to create and man does it hit the spot if you have a sweet tooth!

Ingredients for Layered Kit Kat Cake

  • 1 box Devils food cake mix
  • 1 c sour cream, at room temp
  • 4 eggs, at room temperature
  • 3 oz box chocolate instant pudding
  • 1 c vegetable oil
  • 1/2 c milk
  • 1 t vanilla
  • 1/8 t salt
  • 2 c chocolate chips
  • about 10 packages of Kit Kats
  • 2 or so cups of milk chocolate M&Ms
  • 1 batch of chocolate buttercream icing

You won’t believe how easy this is to create!

Directions for Making a Layered Kit Kat Cake

First we are going to make the chocolate cake.

Add the devils food cake to a large mixing bowl.

Make a small well in the center of the bowl with the mix and add the eggs.

Using your electric mixer mix the eggs into the cake mix.

Slowly add the sour cream, vegetable oil, pudding mix, milk, salt and vanilla.

Mix on medium speed until well blended.

Once well mixed after 2 or so minutes of mixing, turn the mixer off and grab a rubber spatula.

Add the chocolate chips to the bowl and use the spatula to gently fold in the chocolate chips.

Spray two 10 inch, round cake pans with non-stick cooking spray.

Pour half of the batter into each round cake pan.

Pop the pans into a preheated oven at 350 degrees.

Bake the cakes for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the middle of each cake comes out clean.

Once done put the cake pans on a wire rack to cool completely.

While the cakes are cooking make your homemade chocolate frosting. Set it aside or pop in the fridge once done.

Once cool remove the cakes from the pans and level the tops of the cakes with a long serrated knife to ensure the tops are flat.

Place the first layer on a cake platte or platter.

Ice the cake.

Layer the second round cake on top of the first cake. Ice it as well.

Ensure the edges of the cake are iced as well.

Now, let’s add the candies!!

Pull the Kit Kat wafers apart and stand the Kit Kat pieces along the edge of the cake all the way around. The icing is going to help hold the Kit Kat bars in place.

Go all the way around the cake.

Pour the M&Ms into the center of the cake topping the project off.

I also suggest using a pretty ribbon to tie around the cake and make a simple bow in the front just as a final way of securing the Kit Kat bars from falling.

Isn’t it beautiful?

Add your candles and it make the perfect birthday cake!

Do the Eggs Have to be at Room Temperature?

Yes, it really is ideal. When they are at room temperature they combine easier and they will mix more evenly into the cake as you mix it.

It honestly just make for a better cake.

How to Decorate the Kit Kat Cake

Honestly, just add the bow and candles. The Kit Kats and M&Ms are enough!

How to Cut a Kit Kat Cake

Don’t overcomplicate things. You cut it just like you cut a traditional round cake. Just go slow and use a cake slicer to remove each slice from the whole cake.

Kit Kat Cake with M&Ms

We used M&Ms in the center of the cake, but honestly, if you want to use Reeses Pieces, Skittles or any other round-ish candy any of these would be yummy too!

Hey, want to go a little healthy? Top with your favorite fruits!

We made a very similar cake for my son’s Ninja Turtle party one year and boy was it ever sweet! But it was a huge hit and so much simpler to make than a traditionally decorated cake.
