Life Happens and Someone Demands a Big Boy Haircut
Far too often I try to hold on to every last special moment with Matthew… because I know.
I know that we are not having any more babies. Unless there is some act of God that unties my tubes and makes a miracle happen.
He is three and a half and I still call him the baby.
I still watch over him like a Chinook.
I keep him by my side .
And a few weeks ago we had hair cut appointments for Nick and Luke scheduled.
Matthew’s beautiful head of curls were a little out of control and reaching his shoulders, but really all he needed was a bang trim that I could do at home.
My husband has been threatening for weeks to take Matthew in for a haircut. Crystal, it is time, he would say.
When we were at my in-laws earlier in the month my father-in-law even mention that Matthew’s hair was pretty long and his words were something like when are you going to get this kid a haircut.
And don’t get me wrong, it is not that Matthew has never had a haircut as I have documented this a couple of times with photographs. They were trims really.
I am just not ready to get rid of those curls yet. I am not ready for that big boy haircut. Trims I have been able to manage so far, but a full-fledged chop, not so much.
So, here we are at the hair place. Nick climbed up in the chair first. When Nick was done our hair lady wanted to know who is next.(She asks often when can she chop off Matthew’s hair.)
Matthew climbs up in the chair and says me!. I tell him no. We go back and forth with the nos and yeses for a few seconds. As I go to get him out of the chair he starts to cry and saysI a big boy.
Gulp…. my heart sinks.
I look at our hair lady. Ok, we can trim his bangs after all I do not want him to feel left out.
Matthew declares again, I a big boy.
But his curls….
With my permission she gives him a big boy haircut. She quickly cuts the back off before I can change my mind.

I collect locks of hair as if he has never had a haircut before.
I wrap it up in foil to bring it home.
What is wrong with me?

He watches in the mirror, so proud of himself.

I remind him how much he looks like big brother Anthony.

Over the last two weeks every person who sees Matthew is shocked we chopped his hair off.
Honestly, I am still shocked too.
But he wanted it.
And for every person who makes a comment about his hair, Matthew has an immediate reply.
Yap. I a big boy. I like An-foe-nee(Anthony).
He is growing up. And there is nothing I can do about it.
When do your children inspire you as a mother?
