Moms ask me all the time if I can help them start a business from home. It is easier than you may think.

My journey started in 2008 as a hobby and by 2009 I realized I could take my passion and turn it into a business. Still to this day I love seeing moms do this… from home!

how to turn your passion into a business

There are some tips that I share with folks often who want to make money from home. People think that work has to be hard and it can’t actually be something they love. This could not be further from the truth! Let me share with you five tips for creating a business from home.

1. Let your business be something you’re passionate about. What I mean by this is, whatever job you are doing let it be something you don’t wake up dreading. Leave the dreadful jobs in corporate America!  For me, I love helping moms. While I started my blog in 2008 as a way to keep in touch with family and friends, I quickly realized that people were reading my site for advice, resources, ideas, etc.  I loved, love, loved sharing this stuff and it showed. Soon it was not just my family that was reading the things I shared, but also their friends and the friends of their friends. It has been over five years since I decided to turn this blog into a business. It took a lot of time and a lot of volunteering. If this were not something I am passionate about, I would have walked away. If I truly did not feel like this was something I love, there is no way I would get out of bed day after day sharing and writing. The same goes for any business you want to start. If you love crafting, why can’t you turn that craft into a business? If you love sewing, why can’t you turn that into a business? You see where I am going with this… if you are doing what you love it shows! And, why have a job that you despise?

2. Brand yourself. Having a brand is very important. What will the name of your business be? What will your logo be? What is your business tagline? What will your company look like to others? No matter if you are creating a alterations business from home or an online blog for moms teaching them how to cook, you need a brand that helps people visually understand what your business is about. This brand is also what makes you noticeable anywhere your customers see you and find you; social media, print, advertisement, etc.  Part of branding includes deciding on a business name that people will remember.

how to choose the right name for your business

For me, when I started this blog and made it a business I knew that Crystal & Co., would be my name. Why? Because this site is about all things that make up my life and all of the resources and solutions that I find and share each day. I immediately purchased the URL crystalandcomp.com and this became part of my digital identity. I then went and secured social media platforms using this digital identity in each of these places. I suggest you do the same, no matter what type of business you’re creating; a service company, a blog, an online writing service, a resume business, etc. A memorable and meaningful domain name is really important and Name.Kitchen is a great place to help a new business creator like you do just that. Today, if I were creating a blog I would likely choose a domain name that is more descriptive of what I do and not who I am.

If I use the name tool over on Name.Kitchen it is a great way to help me think outside the box when it comes to branding my business. I entered mommy resource into their search tool and gives me the suggestion  mommyresource.solutions as a domain name. I can even click on GoDaddy, or any of the other registrars, to purchase the domain.

Welcome to the video for inspiration. Your business does not have to be a .com name!

3. Go secure your brand on social media! Yes, that’s your next step! Go and create an account for your brand name over on all of the social media platforms. This includes accounts on Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, G+, Instagram, etc. Where ever your customers are, you need to be there too!

4. Set up a work space. Personally, I work each day on my business at my desk that is in my dinning room. Why there? Because I need to be able to take care of our houseful of boys, homeschool them, work on my business and take care of our home easily. Being in the center of our home is what helps me manage my day and be readily available to each of these areas.

5. Create a work schedule. Dedicate time every day to your business. If this is your passion that won’t be hard at all. Start creating a business plan and get going. My work day starts very early. I get up at least 2 hours before anyone else in our home. This allows me to hammer out as much work as possible during uninterrupted time.

If you were starting a business today from home what would it be? I would love to know what you would name your business!

I am starting a new event business but I am struggling with a name. I have done events, weddings, flowers for several years now but am just now wanting to start a business doing what I love. I need help with a name.. I am stuck.

  2. I knew right away what my business name would be and am very happy with the logo and my tagline. I feel it all fits together. My business is a frozen fruit dessert and green smoothie mobile business called Coolee Treats, and the tagline is vegan eats and sweets! The reason the word eats is in there is for expansion into vegan snacks, etc. 🙂 the only problem I have now is getting the supplies and equipment and the right vehicle and someone to help me sell 🙂

  3. My friend and I are wanting to start a business from home. We have a name and a logo. We are still discussing the product, how much to start with. That’s as far as we’ve gotten.
