Best Grilled Cheese Sandwich Recipe
Right now my family is addicted to grilled cheese sandwiches and I blame it all on my friend Kim.
See, early last summer she got me hooked on Trader Joe’s. So each week we make a trip together with our kids.
I generally grab a loaf of their bread and it has no preservatives. This means we have to refrigerate it. Well, I am not a fan a refrigerated bread, but if it is grilled or toasted, who cares.
Enter the best grilled cheese sandwich recipe.
Kim also warned me that Trader Joe’s has the best American cheese slices on the planet. The rest is history. (It is all her fault!)
Needless to say, grilled cheese sandwiches have become a regular for our daytime lunch rotation, and for quick and easy dinners.
Here is how I make them.
Ingredients:
bread, 2 slices per sandwich (we use Trader Joe’s)
American cheese slices, 2 slices per sandwich (we use Trader Joe’s)
2 T (give or take) of real butter for each sandwich
I use this this griddle. I grill these over a 4-5 heat on an electric stove.
Here is our amazing bread and cheese from Trader Joe’s, in case you ever go there you now know what to grab.
Place a pat of butter on the already warm griddle.
Let it start to melt.
Put two pieces of bread over the butter.
Check it after about a 45 seconds. If it is starting to brown it is time to turn.
When you are turning the bread throw on another pat of butter in the breads place.
Then, when you lay the butter down on the non-grilled side, place it right on top of the melting butter.
Repeat on the other side.
Let them toast for about half the time as you did before.
Put two slices of cheese on one of the slices.
Top the cheese with the other bread slice putting the most toasted side up against the cheese. We will flip it in a second to finish toasting.
As soon as the side that is down is a nice golden brown (at this point it has been down for 30 seconds or so…. so it won’t be long) slip it.
Once both sides are equally toasted, you have the best grilled cheese sandwich ever!
WE serve it up with BBQ chips and usually fruit.
Oh man, this is amazing!!!
Butter is the key. Don’t be skimpy on the butter. You can work out later on the treadmill if you want.
The best thing is, this sandwich makes the perfect cold weather comfort food, or the greatest summertime sandwich!
These are indeed wonderful! This is how my great grandmother made them for me when I was a little girl. Everyday she would make me her famous “Cheese Toastie”! You just can’t beat them!
Awe Stacey, that is so sweet and precious. I am so glad you shared this!
And I love that name- Grilled Toastie. Yum!
I just finished a grilled cheese sandwich made with Trader Joe’s cheese. It really is the best cheese ever! I told you! 🙂
I could eat one of those right now. I thought my husband made the best grilled sandwiches, but this looks pretty damn good. We have ham and cheese usually, but I could do a cheese only any day!
Grilled cheese sandwiches are my comfort food. I can never pass one up. I’ve never grilled both sides of the bread but that sounds like a fabulous idea! Think I’ll be making this for lunch today!
That sounds good – a good “kid food”, but still a good comfort adult foot too. 🙂 Especially with tomato soup. Yum. Butter definitely makes it better………Thank you for sharing this. Gentle Joy
