Here’s what you need to make these delicious pancakes!
Flour – Flour gives the pancakes their structure and texture. When you mix it with buttermilk, the proteins in the flour form gluten, making the pancakes light and fluffy. The type of flour you use can really change things up; all-purpose flour gives you a nicely balanced pancake, while whole wheat flour makes it denser and nuttier.
Beaten Eggs – Beaten eggs help with the structure, texture, and taste of the pancakes. Beating the eggs incorporates air, making the pancakes light and fluffy. The proteins in the eggs give the batter stability, so the pancakes hold together and rise evenly while cooking.
Buttermilk – Buttermilk adds flavor and texture that make a big difference. The acidity in buttermilk reacts with the baking soda in the batter, creating bubbles that make the pancakes rise and turn out wonderfully fluffy. This reaction is what gives homemade buttermilk pancakes their light and airy texture, which is so hard to resist.
Sugar – Sugar sweetens the batter, balancing the tanginess of the buttermilk and enhancing the natural flavors of the other ingredients. This sweetness makes every bite delightful and satisfying. Plus, sugar helps the pancakes brown nicely during cooking, giving them that appetizing golden-brown color and a hint of caramelized flavor.
Baking Soda – Baking soda is a leavening agent, and when it meets the acidic buttermilk in the batter, it creates carbon dioxide bubbles. These bubbles get trapped in the batter, making it rise and giving the pancakes that light and fluffy texture we all love.
Baking Powder – Baking powder works with baking soda to give your pancakes the perfect rise and texture. While baking soda reacts right away with the acidic buttermilk, baking powder kicks in as the batter heats up, giving you that second lift. This combo results in fluffier and lighter pancakes.
Salt – Salt boosts the overall flavor by balancing the sweetness from the sugar and the tanginess from the buttermilk. A pinch of salt also brings out the other flavors in the recipe, making the pancakes tastier and more enjoyable.
Butter – Butter boosts the flavor and texture of the final result. When you melt it and mix it into the batter, butter adds moisture that makes the pancakes tender and melt-in-your-mouth good. Plus, it helps achieve that perfect golden-brown exterior by promoting even browning as they cook.
Vanilla – Adding vanilla extract gives a subtle yet distinct sweetness and aroma that complements the other ingredients perfectly. It makes each bite more enjoyable and complex. Plus, the warm, inviting fragrance of vanilla makes the cooking process even more delightful.

Can I Freeze Buttermilk Pancakes for Later?
You can definitely freeze buttermilk pancakes for later! It’s a fantastic way to save time on busy mornings and always have a tasty breakfast ready to go. After cooking, let your pancakes cool to room temperature. This step is crucial because freezing warm pancakes can cause them to become soggy.
Once cooled, lay them out in a single layer on a baking sheet, making sure they don’t touch each other, and freeze until solid. This prevents them from sticking together. Once they’re frozen, pop them into a freezer-safe bag or container, labeled with the date for easy reference. When you’re ready to eat, you can reheat your pancakes using a toaster for a crispy edge, a microwave for a quick fix, or an oven for a perfectly warm interior.
This way, you can enjoy your delicious buttermilk pancakes any day without the fuss of making them from scratch each time! Plus, having a batch ready to go means you’ll always have something nutritious and homemade to start your day off right.
How Do I Make My Pancakes Fluffier?
Getting those perfect fluffy pancakes is all about the right technique and ingredients. First off, don’t overmix your batter; just gently fold the wet and dry stuff together until it’s barely combined. Overmixing can make the pancakes dense, and nobody wants that. A little extra baking powder or baking soda can work wonders by creating more air bubbles for a lighter texture.
Also, let the batter rest for 10-15 minutes before you start cooking; this helps everything hydrate and the leavening agents to do their thing. Lastly, cook your pancakes on medium-low heat so they cook evenly and have time to rise without burning. Follow these tips, and you’ll be flipping perfectly fluffy pancakes every time!
Are there Any Variations to the Basic Buttermilk Pancake Recipe?
There are so many ways to jazz up the basic buttermilk pancake recipe to suit different tastes and diets. Love fruit? Toss in some fresh blueberries, sliced bananas, or even strawberries for a burst of natural sweetness and added nutrients. Chocolate fan? Try adding chocolate chips or a swirl of Nutella for a decadent treat that’s perfect for indulging your sweet tooth.
If you want a healthier option you can swap all-purpose flour for whole wheat and throw in some flaxseeds or chia seeds for an extra boost of fiber and omega-3 fatty acids. You can also play around with spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, or vanilla extract to boost the flavor and add a warm, aromatic touch.
Don’t forget about toppings either—drizzle with pure maple syrup, add a dollop of Greek yogurt, or sprinkle with nuts for added crunch. The possibilities are endless, so get creative and find your perfect pancake twist! Whether you’re cooking for yourself, family, or friends, there’s a variation that everyone will love.

We always make homemade pancakes. Love them! I always forget how yummy buttermilk pancakes are. Thanks for sharing this!
Homemade pancakes are the best. Buttermilk just makes them so much better.
I agree Allan!
Crystal,
These buttermilk pancakes look awesome. I could probably substitute a whole wheat mix flour for the white flour, that’s the only change that I would make. I’m trying to get away from white flour. Thanks for the recipe though, I will have to try this one for sure!
You could totally switch them out. Happy to hear you like the recipe. These pancakes are super yummy!

These look delicious! I’m a total newbie at this stuff, but could regular milk be substituted instead of buttermilk?
I also have gluten free flour/xanthan gum that I’m going to try substituting for my husband!
Yes, you can certainly sub the buttermilk for regular milk.
We tried this recipe today and found they were a little gooey. The flavor was very good though. I think I will try to keep the butter out next time, to prevent the soggy-ness. Love the buttermilk taste.
