Have you ever made buttermilk pancakes from scratch before?
It is so much easier than you think and they taste amazing. It is very cost effective too.
This recipe includes items you likely already have on hand, with the exception of buttermilk. Grab a quart the next time you’re at the grocery story.
Here is how you make them.
(While you’re here, make sure you check out all of my easy recipes that are perfect for busy families!)
Ingredients:
- 2 1/2 c flour
- 2 eggs, beaten
- 2 1/2 c buttermilk
- 1/2 c sugar
- 2 tsp baking soda
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 4 T melted butter
- 1 tsp vanilla
- extra butter for your griddle to prevent sticking or griddle spray
Put all of your dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl.
Add in all the the wet ingredients and whisk until well combined and there are no clumps.
Your batter will be nice and smooth just like this.
For pancakes I like to use a small soup ladle to pour the batter onto the griddle.
I use a small, square, non-stick griddle like this one.
I keep the heat between 4 and 5 and I add a pat of butter to the griddle and let it melt before adding the batter.
I can cook two pancakes at a time on the griddle.
They are not ready to turn until the top of the pancake is covered in bubbles.
Flip it to cook the other side.
Limit the flipping, don’t flip the pancakes 100 times.
Three nice pancakes make a great snack.
Add a pat of butter and some maple syrup over top.
Enjoy every bite.
We sure did.

We always make homemade pancakes. Love them! I always forget how yummy buttermilk pancakes are. Thanks for sharing this!
Homemade pancakes are the best. Buttermilk just makes them so much better.
I agree Allan!
Crystal,
These buttermilk pancakes look awesome. I could probably substitute a whole wheat mix flour for the white flour, that’s the only change that I would make. I’m trying to get away from white flour. Thanks for the recipe though, I will have to try this one for sure!

These look delicious! I’m a total newbie at this stuff, but could regular milk be substituted instead of buttermilk?
I also have gluten free flour/xanthan gum that I’m going to try substituting for my husband!

Yes, you can certainly sub the buttermilk for regular milk.
We tried this recipe today and found they were a little gooey. The flavor was very good though. I think I will try to keep the butter out next time, to prevent the soggy-ness. Love the buttermilk taste.

Yum, I prefer my pancakes from scratch! If one were to add buckwheat, what sort of ratio do you recommend?
