How to Create a 5 Minute Hummus and 7 Smart Ways to Use It

One of the best ways to take control of what you eat is by home cooking and bringing healthy meals to your table. But sometimes getting those healthy options to our plates can be time-consuming or costly. Today I want to share with you a simple and time-efficient recipe that focuses on not only simple cooking, but simple assembling, that maximizes your time in the kitchen, while still creating something you can easily adjust to suit your family’s tastes.

I’m going to share with you one very Easy Appetizer Recipe that you can create at home that will take you no more than five minutes. Let’s get to a simple recipe for hummus!

Simple Hummus Recipe
1-15 oz can chickpeas, drained and rinsed (reserve the canning liquid)
2 tbsp canning liquid (from above)
3 cloves garlic, removed from skin
Juice of one lemon
2 tbsp tahini
1 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp cumin

Add all ingredients to a food processor and process until smooth. If you’re having a tough time getting the texture you’d like, add a bit more canning liquid or olive oil to the processor and stir. Process again until you get the texture you’re looking for.

One of the best things about creating your own hummus at home is that you can change the ingredients to suit whatever mood you’re in or what ingredients you have on hand. For example, if you don’t love the flavor of raw garlic, try adding roasted garlic instead, or omitting it altogether. If you’d like a flavored hummus, add some roasted red peppers or change out the chickpeas for another type of bean. The possibilities on making this your own are endless!

Now that we’ve covered the basic recipe, here are 7 smart ways to enjoy this simple hummus!

  1. Mix into sandwich spread or use in place of meat on sandwiches
  2. At snack time, use as a dip for pita chips and vegetable sticks
  3. Use as a base in salad dressing to give a full flavor creaminess
  4. Add to soups as a thickener – this is a perfect way to add some creaminess without dairy
  5. Use as a base on pizza instead of pizza sauce
  6. Serve alongside traditional homemade falafel and tabbouleh
  7. Pipe into 1-inch hollowed out cucumbers to serve as appetizer bites at your next party

  4. I love hummus and use it as a spread. Now this is going to sound weird but it is absolutely delicious for a low cal snack. I heat a corn tortilla, spread on some hummus, top with deli sliced turkey, fold and eat like a taco. I like it just like that but you could add any number of toppings like cheese, chopped olives, whatever you like.
