Can you tell our family loves tacos.

First, let’s gather up our ingredients.

Ingredients for 5 Pounds of Taco Meat

  • 5 lbs ground beef
  • 1 cup of water or beef broth
  • 1 medium yellow onion
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced (I use the jarred stuff)
  • 5 teaspoons tacos seasoning, more if you want more flavor less if you want less flavor
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch

This is a great recipe and cooks in 30 minutes or less.

First, add the water (or beef broth) into your 8 quart Instant Pot insert.

Add in your ground beef.

Pop the lid on it and set your Instant Pot to manual on high pressure and the cook time for 10 minutes. Ensure the top vent is closed.

After the ten minutes and the timer beeps, use the quick release feature by opening the vent on top of the lid. Be careful, hot steam is going to come out of the top. Step away after opening.

Once the pressure is all released remove the lid and set Instant Pot to its saute function.

Toss in the diced onion, the minced garlic, and your taco seasoning. You have two options here; you can use homemade taco seasoning or buy it from the store. Because I am cooking for so many each night, I have started buying my taco seasoning in bulk at Sams. I buy the brand Tones and get 23 ounces for less than $6. It lasts me a long time.

Add in the cornstarch too and then use one of these meat choppers to help  finely chop the meat up and to incorporate all of the seasonings into the meat mixture. Let is continue to simmer for about five minutes.

Serve it up in soft or hard taco shells for traditional tacos.

Or, you can use this to make a taco salad.

You can also use this pressure cooker taco meat as your filling for Walking Tacos which is a great party food idea!

Yes, you could certainly use ground turkey instead of ground beef. Honestly, you can cook whichever ground meat you want (chicken, pork, venison, etc).

You will cook it and season it exactly the same way.

Can I Freeze Taco Meat

Yes! Any leftover meat can be stored in a freezer friend, air tight container or in a freezer Ziplock bag.

Keeping cooked taco meat in your freezer is a great way to make dinner super fast on a busy weeknight! It’s a great way to make meal prepping easy!

What Kind of Ground Beef Should I Use for Tacos

I perfect to use 80/20 beef. The 20% fat gives the meat lots of flavor. Flavorful meat is important for a good taco!

How Do You Cook Perfect Taco Meat

Are Tacos Gluten Free?

Your meat and vegetables used in this recipe are gluten free. They key is paying attention to your seasoning. As long as the seasonings are gluten free then this is a GF meal. If you’re using store bought taco seasoning, read the label. Some taco seasoning has gluten in it.
