Jute Rugs and Bamboo Mats
Gosh, I guess it has been about three months ago now when Luke was in the living room standing on a paint can.
Why was there a half full paint can in the living room? Because we had just painted and left one can in the dining room for some quick touch ups that needed to be done.
Luke moved the paint can to the living room one evening and decided it would make the perfect stage for his little performance. He jumped up once, the paint can fell to it’s side, and as he landed the lid shot off and half a can of paint shot all over our living room. The walls. Luke’s clothes. The carpet. Our rug. Matthew’s toy kitchen.
Nick and Luke quickly decided to make paint angels lying on their back and moving their arms to and fro.
I put down my bon bons and my eleven year old and I scrubbed paint off the walls, hosed down children and the toy kitchen while Lenny tackled the carpet and rug.
Bottom line, we have never replaced the rug. I need something bionic. Indestructible. Something immune to children who can break 12 pound dumbbells. (I have pictures to prove it!)
What about a Jute rug? I am told they are eco-friendly and extremely durable. Who knew?
I really like the natural colors. And, if my children destroy it, we could always make it into something else- like twine or rope or a dress for Mommy.
Or maybe we could go green (or red) with a large bamboo mat?
Have you ever owned jute or bamboo? What was your experience with it?

Haven’t had either in my home, but I have seen flooring made from bamboo. It’s beautiful, but priced out of my budget. I am seriously considering the painted concrete floor. I have seen it done well and I am such a fan. Before the “it’s so cold” comments start, I will just say I am a middle aged grandma who is generally a little warm all the time..if you get my drift. And I would have an excuse to go “rug shopping”! 🙂
You know what Becki? I LOVE concrete painted floors. I would do it in a hearbeat, but Lenny does not like them.
I hate our carpet, it gets so dirty. I miss the hardwood floors in my old house… I would love to put in real hardwood or bamboo flooring. I would even go for tile.
Lenny is a carpet kinda guy. He likes to sit and lay on the floor and so do the kids… he says concrete, tile, wood are too hard. But we have ‘fake’ wood in our dining room and kitchen and would love to extend it to the rest of the house.
And rug shopping can be fun! 🙂
I haven’t had either! I’m on a quest for great flooring at a reasonable price too. I’m not a fan of carpet for the same reasons as you, but my hubby likes the comfort.
Bamboo is awesome.
I don’t have any experience with those. However, they sound interesting. Please let us know what you end up going with and how it goes.
I feel ya… my carpet is horrible, but I refuse to do anything with it until my kids stop destroying things. LOL!
Can you vaccum them?
Andrea, as far as I know vacuuming is not an issue at all….
I have not had either of those, but would love to try them too.
Never had either of those. We have plain ol’ hard wood floors. We had a big area rug in the living room when the oldest was little but there were so many messes that we decided that rugs are not a good idea til the kids are older. Makes it easier on me,
Wow! It’s amazing how much that red carpet pops and really dresses up the set. Love it!
We had to give up on carpets when my daughter was diagnosed with allergies, but rugs are fine and dress up our rooms.
