Yesterday I was pretty exhausted by the time evening rolled around. We’ve had a busy week and I have indulged myself in teacher appreciation projects. But that is what I love to do.

I started the day with an early morning drive to pick Garrett up from his dad’s. He has started spending the night with them on Wednesday nights and there is a conflict on who is responsible for taking him to school the next morning. So, to avoid the exhausting fights and missed school, I just drive 20 miles that way and go get him before school starts on Thursday mornings.

I took Garrett and Anthony to school, hurried home and got the twins ready for Mother’s Day Out. They are bears by Thursday and we are ALWAYS late. Always. So late in fact, they missed chapel yesterday morning.

From there Matthew and I were off to pick up a few last minute supplies I needed to finish up a couple of teacher gifts.

Home for an hour and a half and I break out the hair dryer to speed they drying process up for a gift…. we need to hurry.   I have a 1:00 meeting to make it to.

With a  little one in tow I arrive to our meeting. I feel like I am watching the clock knowing I must leave by 2:10 to pick up the twins from MDO. 2:10 turns into 2:20 and Matthew and I are off again.

We leave MDO and we’re headed to pick up big kids from school- their dismissal time is 3:00. I am a taxi cab.

We have plans to meet up with my friend Kim and her kids for an early dinner at a local hole in the wall burger joint. I am giving her some baby clothes I had in storage for a friend of hers that is in need. I realize I left the clothes at home, which ends up being a good thing because Matthew has pooped and I forgot to grab his froggy backpack with our handy diapers and wipes. We swing back by the house.

Finally we’re on the road to Clown Burger. Can’t wait. We can taste it. The kids are excited to see their friends.

We arrive and Clown Burger is closed. The sign on the door read Sorry, We’re Out. It was 4:20. I beat Kim there. I call her to break the news, Guess what? He closed early. We’re so irritated, but not surprised.

This is what you should know about Clown Burger. They have been around since my friend Kim was a little girl. The facility is older than dirt, tiny, super hot in the summer time, and there is often times a line out the door. The man who runs the joint, he is the equivalent of the Soup Nazi on Seinfeld. Todayhe may not be taking credit cards. Tomorrow he may decide to close before the lunch rush. He is open some Saturdays, at his discretion. When it is your turn to order, you order quickly and do not ask questions for fear that he will ask you to leave.  When your number is called you eat happily, with a smile on your face, devouring every last bite of the hand cut potato fries. This is totally a Nutrisystem cheat day. Totally.

He is closed. Early.   Kim and I swear, just like the other 200 times we arrive only to find a closed sign, we are never eating here again. Grumpy old man. Closed. We settle for Chick-fil-a. At least the kids can play on the playground.

We eat. My head is pounding. I have no ibuprofen. Kim offers me her last Tylenol. Uncoated. Only half a pill is left in the bottle. I am desperate. We stay until after 7:00, missing the twins baseball practice and American Idol. I am zapped, but I needed adult conversation and so did she.

Finally we’re home and I start barking out shower orders to the boys. I take a minute to check and answer emails, schedule a few tweets, no time for a blog post. My headache is finally gone. Matthew is at the kitchen table- the table I left covered in craft supplies.   A hot glue gun, scrapbook paper, scissors, pencils. Clearly I am a horrible mother.  Apparently the Windex was near by as well. I hear the familiar sound of the Windex trigger and the smell of blue ammonia fills the air. The toddler. He is so creative and cute as he fills his dump-truck with Windex. He is so proud when I catch him.

I wipe the blue mess up with a paper-towel and dump the Windex from the toy trucks into the sink. I must have missed the fact that my container of Mod Podge was nearby, too.  Now that was a fun mess to clean up.

Bedtime could not come fast enough.

  1. I love this post. Makes me feel better knowing that I am not the only one who leaves things out for the kids to get into. lol. Great photos. It looks like he had a blast.

  2. I am SO glad to NOT be the only one that takes pictures-of messes, before taking a deep breath. Then cleaning up the mess!
    Thx

  3. And THAT, my ladies, is why God gives us children when we are YOUNG!!! LOL……thanks for sharing this, Crystal. Yes, I remember those days. 🙂

Lol. What else is there to do but laugh? Looks like he had fun. 🙂

Sometimes I want to run screaming and crying out my door and down the street. Cameron Diaz was in a movie called Very Bad Things. In the ending scene she does just that….runs away screaming and crying. You should watch it sometime. Just watch it alone. Not a kid’s movie. Oh wait, you are never alone.

Thank you for meeting with us! We had a great time as always and thank you for the clothes. She is going to be sooo excited! Have a great, stress free weekend.

  5. In a divorce decree its usually pretty clear who is responsible for pick up times. You’re attorney could provide you the information you need. If they drive 20 miles to pick up( if they do ), seems it would be only fair you return the 20 mile pick up the next day. I’m in a similiar situation and my attorney informed me I have to pick my boys up Friday morning ( they stay at there dads Thursdays night and he picks them up from school or my place. And in return have to do the pick up the next day by law. Just an fyi sweeti.!

    1. Hi Mary Ann- our decree needs to be revisited. There are sections written very poorly. I was 22/23 when I divorced…. did not catch the elusiveness at the time. it just states that on Wednesday’s their time starts at 6:00pm and ends Thursday morning at 8:00 am. School starts at 8:00 am….

Our current attorney says the statement in the decree pertaining to Wednesdays really needs to be defined by a judge.

  6. This post made me laugh – I hope it is making you laugh now that it’s over! I can’t imagine the mess you had to clean up! ;D

    1. You know Amy, I may have even laughed during the mess…. I just gotta roll with it. Ya know?

  7. Thanks for the laugh! 🙂
It felt so good to know others have weeks/days like mine.
