Honestly, this is one of the easiest cake recipes I’ve made in a while. This apple cake is just so simple, because you’re using boxed cake mixes as your base. So there’s no need for flour, baking powder, apple spice, or any of that mess. Just what you need to make a boxed cake–and a few other additions that make this cake so special.

Apple Orange Spice Cake Recipe

What You Need to Make Apple Spice Cake with Orange

  • 1/2 box spice cake mix
  • 1/2 box orange cake mix
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 2 cups diced peeled apple
  • Chopped mixed nuts
  • 1 tspn orange zest (optional)

What You Need to Make the Brown Sugar Frosting

  • 7 tbsp flour
  • 1 1/4 cups whole milk (alternatively you can use 1 cup of whole milk and 1/4 cup orange juice for a little orange flavor)
  • 1 1/2 tbsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups un-salted butter, room temperature
  • 1 1/2 cups brown sugar packed
  • 1 tsp of salt

How to Make Apple Orange Cake

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

Grease and flour a cake pan or baking dish- I used a 9×13

In a large bowl, add the cake mixes, spices, oil, eggs, vanilla and buttermilk.

Mix for 3-5 minutes or until the dry ingredients are fully incorporated throughout.

Fold in the diced apples and pour into the prepared cake pan.

Pour the batter into your prepared pan.

Bake 35 to 40 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Place the cake on a wire rack to cool completely.

Prepare the frosting by warming your milk over medium heat.

Add one tablespoon of  flour into the warm milk at a time, stirring constantly, until it thickens.

Remove from heat and let it cool to room temperature.

Stir in the vanilla.

In a medium bowl, cream the butter, sugar, and salt together.

Add the milk and flour mixture to the butter mixture.

Beat the mixture for about 5 minutes until it is the consistency of whipped cream.

Spread the frosting over the top of the cake in an even layer.

Garnish with mixed nuts and/or orange zest. You can use a microplane to zest the orange.

How Long Does Apple Orange Spice Cake Last?

Because cake is pretty hearty, in general, I’d say it typically lasts 3-5 days out on the counter in an airtight container. However, in this case, because the frosting is a thin frosting, it will almost kind of “soak in” to the cake within a few days, if you leave the cake on the counter. So, my recommendation is, if you want to snack on this yummy apple orange cake recipe for a few days, just go ahead and refrigerate it.

Plus, the cake will last longer, like say 10-12 days, you can always pop that airtight container into the refrigerator.

Can You Freeze Apple Orange Cake?

Absolutely! Just take that same airtight container and pop it in the freezer. Or, you can go ahead and cut your cake into multiple slices and put each one in an airtight container to freeze.

Because the cake has a thin frosting, it might not defrost quite as nicely as the rest of the cake–it’s not like it’s a buttercream. But the cake will still be tasty and the icing will still be nice, just maybe not as soft and thick as the first day.
