Tips for Making Homemade Cupcakes and Icing
If making something like this feels intimidating to you, here are some of my best tips. Cupcakes are one of my favorite things to make. I think you will find this to be so much easier than you think!
- Start with Room Temperature Ingredients
- Butter, eggs, and milk mix more evenly when they’re at room temperature. This means a smoother batter and fluffier cupcakes.
- Don’t Overmix the Batter
- Stir just until everything is combined. Overmixing can make the cupcakes dense instead of light and airy.
- Use an Ice Cream Scoop
- For evenly sized cupcakes, scoop the batter into the liners with an ice cream scoop. It keeps things tidy and ensures they bake evenly.
- Fill Liners Appropriately
- Fill cupcake liners about two-thirds full. This gives them room to rise without spilling over.
- Preheat Your Oven and Don’t Peek
- Make sure your oven is fully preheated before baking. Once the cupcakes are in, resist the urge to open the door—you don’t want to lose heat and affect the rise.
- Cool Cupcakes Completely Before Frosting
- Warm cupcakes will melt your icing. Be patient and give them time to cool completely for best results.

Tips or Making Homemade Icing
I know it can be very temping to grab the premade stuff at the store. But…. it really is super easy to make your own frosting. I’ve been doing it for years. Here are some of my best pointers.
- Whip the Butter Well
- For the creamiest frosting, beat the butter until it’s light and fluffy before adding sugar or other ingredients.
- Add Sugar Slowly
- When making frosting, add the powdered sugar a little at a time so it doesn’t create a big mess and blends smoothly.
- Adjust Consistency as Needed
- Too thick? Add a tablespoon of heavy cream at a time until it’s perfect. Too thin? Add a little powdered sugar.
- Use a Piping Bag for a Professional Look

Easy Decorating Tips for Homemade Cupcakes
Use a Star Tip with a Piping Bag for Decorating A star tip is perfect for creating swirls of frosting that look bakery-worthy. It’s easier than it seems and elevates the look instantly.
Pop Whopper Eggs on Right Before Serving To keep the decorations crisp and fresh, add the Whopper eggs and bunny toppers right before serving rather than ahead of time.
Get Creative With Colors If you’re feeling festive, divide the frosting and add a few drops of food coloring to make pastel shades perfect for Easter. Your end result does not have to look just like mine.
Chill Frosted Cupcakes if Needed If your frosting gets too soft, chill the cupcakes in the fridge for a few minutes to firm them up—but don’t leave them too long or they’ll lose their fresh-baked charm.
These simple tips will help you nail the perfect texture, flavor, and presentation. Whether you’re a seasoned baker or just getting started, you’ll have fun and create desserts that look as good as they taste!
How Far in Advance Can I Make These Cupcakes
You can m up to 2-3 days in advance, as long as you store them properly to keep them fresh and delicious. For best results, bake the cupcakes and allow them to cool completely before storing them in an airtight container at room temperature. This keeps them soft and moist without drying out.
When it comes to the frosting, it’s ideal to make it fresh the day you plan to frost the cupcakes, but it can also be made 1-2 days ahead. Simply store the frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator. When you’re ready to use it, bring it to room temperature and give it a quick whip with a hand mixer to restore its creamy texture.
If you’d like to assemble the cupcakes ahead of time, frost them no more than a day before serving for optimal freshness. Place the decorated cupcakes in an airtight container and store them in the fridge. Just remember to add the shimmery Whopper eggs and bunny toppers right before serving to keep everything looking crisp and festive. This way, your cupcakes will taste like they just came out of the oven (and look picture-perfect too)!
