Ingredients Needed for this Trifle Recipe
Here’s what you need for this berry dessert!
- Angel Food Cake – Angel food cake provides a light and airy texture that perfectly complements the creamy and fruity layers of the dessert. This type of cake, made primarily from egg whites, sugar, and flour, has a delicate sweetness and a velvety texture that doesn’t overpower the freshness of the blueberries and strawberries.
- Blueberries – These little berries add a burst of natural sweetness and a slight tartness that enhances the overall taste of the dessert. Rich in antioxidants and vitamins, blueberries not only contribute nutritional benefits but also provide a refreshing contrast to the creamy layers of cream cheese and sweetened condensed milk.
- Strawberries – Strawberries bring a bright, juicy flavor and a vibrant red hue that enhances the dessert’s visual appeal and taste. These versatile berries have a natural sweetness complemented by a subtle tartness, which pairs wonderfully with the milder blueberries and the creamy layers of the trifle. Not just a treat for the taste buds, strawberries are also rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and dietary fiber, contributing to the nutritional value of the dessert.
- Cream Cheese – Its subtle tanginess complements the sweetness of the berries and the angel food cake, adding a depth of flavor that balances the overall dessert. When combined with sweetened condensed milk, the cream cheese creates a smooth and creamy consistency that is easy to layer and provides a luscious mouthfeel.
- Sweetened Condensed Milk – Sweetened condensed milk contributes a rich, smooth sweetness that elevates the dessert’s flavor profile. Its thick consistency helps to create a sturdy whipped cream that can hold up the layers of angel food cake, blueberries, and strawberries without becoming too watery. The concentrated milk adds a velvety texture and depth of flavor, ensuring each bite of the trifle is luxurious and satisfying.
- Vanilla – When incorporated into the whipped cream, vanilla provides a fragrant undertone that complements the other ingredients without overpowering them. This classic flavoring acts as a unifying component, bringing together the tangy notes of the cream cheese, the sweetness of the condensed milk, and the fresh flavors of the berries and angel food cake.
- Lemon Juice – Lemon juice adds a bright, zesty flavor that cuts through the richness of the cream cheese and sweetened condensed milk mixture. This citrusy tang provides a refreshing contrast to the dessert’s sweetness, making each bite more balanced and enjoyable. Plus, the acidity helps stabilize the cream mixture, ensuring a smooth texture that holds well in the trifle layers.
- Heavy Cream – Heavy cream provides the necessary fat to get that perfect light and airy texture. Unlike milk or light cream, heavy cream has a higher milk fat content, which means it whips up to a stable and voluminous consistency. This whipped cream layer adds a rich and creamy touch that makes the trifle even more indulgent.

How Far in Advance Can I Make the Blueberry Berry Trifle?
You can prepare the Blueberry Berry Trifle up to 24 hours in advance. In fact, this dessert benefits from some time to chill and allow the flavors to meld together, creating a harmonious blend of tastes and textures. To ensure the freshest presentation, it’s best to assemble the trifle, cover it tightly with plastic wrap, and store it in the refrigerator until you’re ready to serve. This resting time allows the layers to set, making it easier to slice and serve while keeping its visually appealing layers intact.
When you cover the trifle, make sure the plastic wrap is snug and airtight to prevent the dessert from absorbing any unwanted fridge odors. Additionally, the chilling process helps the whipped cream layer to firm up, maintaining the dessert’s luscious consistency.
To avoid the berries from becoming overly soft or the cake layer from becoming too soggy, it’s recommended not to make the trifle more than a day ahead. If possible, add the final touches such as a sprinkle of fresh berries or a dusting of powdered sugar just before serving to enhance its visual appeal and freshness even further.
How Do I Store Leftovers of this Berry Trifle?
Storing leftovers of the berry trifle is a breeze, so you can savor this yummy dessert for a few more days. Just cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap or pop individual servings into airtight containers. This keeps the trifle fresh and free from fridge odors.
Stick the covered trifle or containers in the fridge, and it should last for 2-3 days. Remember, the texture might change a bit as the cake soaks up moisture from the cream and fruit. For the best taste, try to finish it within this timeframe. Enjoy!
Can I Add Other Ingredients to the Trifle?
Absolutely! A berry trifle is such a fun and versatile dessert that you can really get creative with. Feel free to mix it up and add or swap in other ingredients to suit your taste. For example, try using different fruits like raspberries, blackberries, or even mango chunks for a tropical twist. If you want a bit of crunch, toss in some nuts like crushed almonds or pecans.
For an extra layer of flavor, drizzle some fruit preserves or a splash of liqueur like Grand Marnier or Amaretto between the layers. The key is to balance the flavors and textures so everything works together without one thing overpowering the others. Enjoy experimenting!
