Ingredients Needed for this Cookie Recipe
Here’s what you need to make these cookie cutter spiders!
- Unsalted Butter – Using unsalted butter for your Cookie Cutter Spider Cookies is super important if you want to nail that perfect flavor balance. When you go for unsalted butter, you can better control the sweetness of the dough and let flavors like vanilla and powdered sugar really shine.
- Powdered Sugar – Powdered sugar, or confectioners’ sugar as some call it, adds a special sweetness and smooth texture that regular granulated sugar just can’t match. The fine texture of powdered sugar makes for soft, tender cookies that melt in your mouth.
- Vanilla – Vanilla adds a warm, aromatic flavor that really boosts the overall taste. This beloved extract doesn’t just make things sweeter; it adds depth and pairs beautifully with that buttery base and powdered sugar.
- Egg – Eggs do a bunch of things that really help with the texture and flavor. They act like a glue, holding all the ingredients together so those cute spider shapes stay intact while baking. Plus, they add moisture, which keeps the cookies nice and soft instead of dry and crumbly.
- Flour – Flour is such an important ingredient for making Cookie Cutter Spider Cookies—it really is the backbone of the dough! It gives those cookies the structure and stability they need to hold their spooky shape while baking. All-purpose flour is best because it has a nice balance of protein, which helps the cookies turn out soft yet sturdy.
- Baking Soda – Baking soda acts as a leavening agent, helping the cookies rise and get that perfect texture. When you mix baking soda with acidic ingredients like powdered sugar, it creates carbon dioxide gas, which forms air pockets and makes the cookies puff up while they bake. This gives you light and tender cookies instead of dense ones.
- Cream of Tartar – This acts like a stabilizer for the egg whites when you whip them, which is super important for giving the cookies that light and airy texture. By helping create a stronger meringue with sugar, it not only improves the texture but also keeps the cookies from losing their shape while they bake.
- Cookie Cutter – A cookie cutter helps you shape the dough into fun and festive spider designs. Plus, using a cookie cutter ensures that each cookie is the same size and shape, which looks great when you present your treats. This uniformity also helps with even baking—cookies that are all the same size tend to bake at the same rate, so you won’t end up with some overcooked and others underdone. We used a wrapped candy cookie cutter from Amazon.
- Gel Food Coloring – This gel gives you those vibrant, rich colors without messing with the dough’s consistency. Unlike liquid food coloring, which can thin things out and change the texture, gel food coloring stays true to its color when baked, making your cookies look amazing and perfect for Halloween.
- Small Edible Eyes – Edible eyes are the perfect way to finish off these fun treats! They take these simple treats and turn them into fun, spooky creations that everyone can enjoy. Not only do they make the cookies look even more like creepy spiders, but they also add a playful touch that really captures the Halloween spirit.

How Do I Store Homemade Cutout Cookies?
To keep your creations nice and fresh, it’s important to store them the right way! First, let those cookies cool completely before popping them into an airtight container. If you’ve decorated them with cute edible eyes or icing, just slide a piece of parchment paper between the layers to keep them from sticking together. For the best taste, you can store them at room temperature for about a week.
Want to keep them longer? No problem! Just lay the cooled cookies in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze until solid. Then, transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container, and they’ll be good for up to three months. When you’re ready to enjoy some, just thaw them at room temperature for a few hours first. Happy snacking!
Can I Customize the Cookies with Different Decorations?
Customizing your spider cookies is such a fun way to get creative for any occasion. You can try out different icings, like royal icing or fondant, for those fancy designs, or just grab some store-bought icing if you’re short on time. Throw on some colorful sprinkles, edible glitter, or seasonal candies to make them pop!
For a spooky vibe, melted chocolate can be perfect for creating spider webs or drizzling it over the cookies. Plus, using various cookie cutter shapes lets you whip up all kinds of spooky creatures, so every batch can be a little different and super fun for Halloween! The possibilities are endless, so let your imagination go wild and have a blast decorating!
Can I Freeze the Cookie Dough?
Absolutely, you can freeze the dough for your Cookie Cutter Spider Cookies! It’s super handy because you can prepare it ahead of time for quick baking later. Just shape the dough into whatever forms you like—flattened discs or rolled logs, depending on how you want to use it. Then, wrap each piece tightly in plastic wrap or pop it in an airtight container to keep it fresh and avoid freezer burn.
You can freeze it for up to three months! When you’re ready to bake, just take the dough out of the freezer and let it thaw in the fridge for a few hours or overnight. Then roll it out and use your cookie cutter. Enjoy those fresh, homemade cookies anytime with this easy trick!
