Ingredients Needed for this Apple Cake
Here’s what you need to make this easy instant pot recipe!
- Granny Smith Apples – Their tartness and firm texture really shine through. The natural acidity balances out the sweetness of the cake, creating a delicious contrast that keeps every bite exciting. Unlike softer apple varieties, Granny Smith apples hold their shape nicely while cooking, giving you that satisfying crunch in the moist cake.
- Ground Cinnamon – It really brings warmth and depth to the flavor. This spice pairs perfectly with the tartness of Granny Smith apples, making their natural sweetness shine and creating a tasty treat. Plus, cinnamon has some great health perks too, like being packed with antioxidants and having anti-inflammatory effects, so you can enjoy this dessert with a little extra nutrition.
- Sugar – Sugar adds sweetness and balances the tartness of those Granny Smith apples. Not only does it boost the flavor, but it also helps make the cake nice and moist with a tender crumb. As it cooks, sugar caramelizes, giving the cake a rich flavor and that beautiful golden color.
- Flour – Flour gives the dessert its structure and stability, and the gluten helps create that light, fluffy texture we all love. The type of flour you choose can really change things up too; all-purpose flour is usually the go-to because it works well and gives balanced results.
- Baking Powder – Baking powder works as a leavening agent, helping the cake rise and giving it that light, airy texture we all love. When you mix it with the moisture from the apples and the heat from the Instant Pot, it creates carbon dioxide bubbles that make the cake rise beautifully while it cooks.
- Kosher Salt – A lot of people think salt is just for seasoning, but it actually helps balance the sweetness and brings out the natural flavors of ingredients like apples and cinnamon. Plus, its bigger grain size makes it easier to mix in evenly.
- Canola Oil – Unlike solid fats like butter, canola oil creates a smooth texture that makes each slice soft and delicious. Plus, this light oil has a neutral flavor, so the yummy taste of Granny Smith apples and spices really shines through without being overpowered.
- Pulp Free Orange Juice – Pulp-free orange juice is a great addition to Instant Pot Apple Cake! It brings a nice citrus flavor that really brightens up the dessert. The acidity balances out the sweetness of the sugar and enhances the tartness of Granny Smith apples. Plus, it adds moisture, keeping the cake tender and soft.
- Large Eggs – Large eggs are super important in making Instant Pot Apple Cake! They give the dessert structure, moisture, and that rich flavor we all love. The proteins in the eggs help the cake rise and keep its shape while it cooks. When you beat the eggs with the other ingredients, they whip in air, making the cake light and fluffy.
- Powdered Sugar – Powdered sugar is perfect for dusting your Instant Pot Apple Cake! Its fine texture gives a delicate and pretty finish. Plus, it dissolves easily, adding a light, sweet touch that enhances the cake’s yummy apple and cinnamon flavors without taking over.

What Type of Apples Should I Use for This Recipe?
For this Instant Pot Apple Cake, I totally recommend using Granny Smith apples—they’re tart and have that nice firm texture. But honestly, feel free to mix it up with other apple varieties for some fun flavor twists! If you want something sweeter, go for Fuji or Honeycrisp apples; they have that perfect balance of sweetness with a little tang.
If you’re into a softer, caramelized taste, Gala or Jonagold apples are awesome too. In the end, it’s all about what you love and how sweet you want your cake. Mixing different apples can really make the flavor pop!
Can I Substitute a Different Type of Oil if I Don’t Have Canola Oil?
If you don’t have canola oil on hand, no worries—there are plenty of alternatives that won’t mess with the flavor or texture of your Instant Pot Apple Cake. For a simple swap, vegetable oil works great since it has a neutral taste. You can also try sunflower oil or grapeseed oil; they both add moisture and keep things consistent.
If you’re in the mood for something richer, olive oil can do the trick, just keep in mind it might give the cake a hint of flavor. And if you want a more natural option, coconut oil is a solid choice—just remember to melt it first so it blends nicely with everything else. Any of these oils will help keep your cake wonderfully soft while using what you’ve got!
Can I Add Nuts or Raisins to This Recipe?
You can totally throw in some nuts or raisins in your Instant Pot Apple Cake for an extra kick of flavor and texture. Chopped nuts like walnuts or pecans add a nice crunch that pairs perfectly with the soft cake. Just remember to lightly toast them first to boost their flavor! As for raisins, they bring a natural sweetness and a chewy bite that goes great with tart Granny Smith apples.
If you decide to add either (or both!), you might want to cut back on the sugar just a bit to balance out the extra sweetness from the raisins. When you mix them in, just fold them gently into the batter before cooking to make sure they’re well-distributed. Have fun experimenting with different combos!
