Ingredients Needed for this Bread Pudding
Here’s what you need for this pumpkin recipe!
- French Bread – The unique texture of french bread soaks up moisture without falling apart, and that crusty outside gives a nice crunch against the soft, custardy inside. Plus, its slightly tangy flavor really amps up the sweetness of the pumpkin puree and warm spices, creating a fantastic balance of taste.
- Heavy Whipping Cream – The high fat content of this cream not only makes the custard super creamy but also creates a velvety consistency that perfectly coats the bread. When it bakes, the cream adds a touch of sweetness and depth that really enhances the pumpkin and spices, making every bite feel indulgent.
- Pumpkin Puree – Pumpkin puree adds amazing flavor and nutrition to this tasty dessert. Its natural sweetness creates a rich base that really boosts the overall taste, and the creamy texture keeps the pudding moist and delicious. The subtle earthy flavor of pumpkin pairs perfectly with warm spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, giving you that cozy autumn vibe.
- Sugar – Sugar adds just the right sweetness to balance out the savory notes of the pumpkin and spices. Plus, it really enhances the overall flavor, letting the natural sugars in the pumpkin puree shine through while giving a nice contrast to the rich cream. When you bake it, sugar helps with caramelization, giving you that lovely golden top and a slightly crispy texture.
- Large Eggs – Large eggs act like glue, holding all the ingredients together. When baked, the proteins in the eggs come together to create that perfect firm yet tender texture we love in a custard. Plus, they add a wonderful richness and creaminess to the dish.
- Cinnamon – Cinnamon pairs perfectly with the rich pumpkin and cream, adding a cozy vibe that takes you back to autumn and holiday baking. Plus, it’s naturally sweet, so you don’t need to add as much sugar, but it still gives the pudding great depth.
- Vanilla – The sweet, warm aroma and flavor of vanilla really take the dish to a whole new level. This delightful extract not only boosts the natural sweetness of the pumpkin but also works perfectly with the spices, creating a delicious blend in every bite.
- Unsalted Butter – Using unsalted butter gives you better control over seasoning, so the natural sweetness of the pumpkin and the warmth of the spices really shine without getting drowned out by salt.
- Light Brown Sugar – The unique flavor really shines through, thanks to the molasses content that adds a subtle caramel note. This enhances the sweetness and pairs perfectly with the richness of the pumpkin and cream. Light brown sugar creates that velvety texture in the sauce, dissolving smoothly for a luscious consistency.

Can I Use a Different Type of Bread Instead of French Bread?
French bread is awesome because it soaks up the custard perfectly without falling apart. But hey, there are tons of other breads you can use for your pumpkin bread pudding! Challah or brioche are fantastic picks; their richness and softness create such a delightful texture when baked. Sourdough adds this unique tang that pairs so well with the sweetness of pumpkin.
Even whole wheat or oat bread can work if you’re after a healthier twist, and they still taste great! Just keep in mind that you might want to adjust the soaking time since different breads absorb moisture in their own way. Experimenting with different breads can lead to some really tasty variations of this cozy dessert!
